With the average life expectancy of the breed being between 5-8, it’s clear that this number is going in the wrong direction. Knowledge is power and without knowing how to prevent the issues that the Dogue de Bordeaux is faced with, the breed will eventually perish. With funding ear marked for health initiatives and DNA research, we hope to be able to increase the longevity of the breed and reduce the impact of the health issues the DDB faces.
We hope to be able to create an maintain a Cause of Death survey that is accurate and gives us real information that can be used to help increase life expectancy. If we know what the main issues are, we know where to best utilize funding to help achieve these goals.
There are currently several studies specifically for the breed. Not only do they need funding, they need DNA from dogues that are not only affected, but also dogues that are clear.
